Regulus Caves Visit to the heart of the limestone cliffs of Meschers

Located 12 km from Royan, the Grottes du Régulus, a municipal troglodyte site, will be open to the public from spring 2025.

Overlooking the Gironde estuary and dug into limestone cliffs, the "holes" of Meschers welcome you in an exceptional setting. Originally natural, the Meschers caves were enlarged by man to become a troglodyte habitat in the 19th century.

In 2022, the municipality decided to carry out major work to secure and requalify the caves. That same year, the site was enriched with a new museography.

The name Régulus comes from a French ship which, under Napoleon, chased by the English, was scuttled off Meschers. Topics covered during the visit: refuge site for Protestants during the Wars of Religion, geology, estuary, fishing, tourism in the 19th century, carrelet on pontoon, history of Régulus, legend of Cadet the wrecker and troglodyte habitat.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Opening dates:

• Opening in spring 2025, 7 days a week;
• from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in July and August).

• 8.70€/adult (16 years and over), 6.10€/child (6-15 years)

1. La Nocturne: meet the most famous troglodytes in the flesh! Every Tuesday evening in July and August (reservation required).
2. The Cagouille Rally for groups of children aged 3-12. Learn while having fun! (reservation required).
3. The treasure hunts of the little shrimp Minidik! For adults and children. Many prizes to be won after a draw at the end of the year... Self-service at reception.
4. The Strolls from 9 p.m. every Thursday evening in July/August. Free stroll for a special moment at sunset. Ideal for families. No reservation required.
5. Participation in the European Heritage Days in September. No reservation required.
