    • Located 12 km from Royan, the Regulus Caves, a municipal troglodyte site, are open to the public until November 13, 2023.

Overlooking the Gironde estuary and dug into the limestone cliffs, the "holes" of Meschers welcome you in an exceptional setting. Originally natural, the caves of Meschers were enlarged by man to become a troglodyte habitat in the 19th century.

The name of Régulus comes from a French ship which, under Napoleon, chased by the English was scuttled in front of Meschers. Themes covered during the visit: refuge site for Protestants during the Wars of Religion, geology, estuary, fishing, tourism in the 19th century, carrelet on pontoon, history of Regulus, legend of Cadet the wrecker and troglodyte habitat.

Very nice to see. The cave is very nice run. A little terrace with coffee (from the machine) is also worth to take a brake. For kids under age of 6 the entrance is free. I recommend to lower the price for older children but in general the price is worth the visit.
