    • CHÂTEAU DE LA ROCHE COURBON: A HISTORICAL TREASURE IN SAINTONGE

A remarkable historical and architectural heritage

The Château de la Roche Courbon, located in Charente-Maritime, is an emblematic historical monument of the region. Nestled in the heart of Saintonge, this castle offers an immersion in several centuries of history, from the Middle Ages to the classical era. Built in the 15th century, then renovated in the 17th century, it has stood the test of time while retaining its original character and charm. Its vast rooms, its lounges decorated with woodwork and paintings, as well as its period furniture allow visitors to immerse themselves in the history of the region.

The castle is famous for its imposing architecture, towers and moats, which give it a majestic and refined appearance. Upon entering the grounds, visitors discover a residence that skillfully combines the French art of living with local traditions.

French gardens, a haven of peace

Surrounded by a vast estate of more than 40 hectares, the Château de la Roche Courbon is particularly renowned for its French gardens. These carefully maintained gardens extend at the foot of the castle and offer a magnificent view of the green terraces, flower beds and ponds decorated with statues. The harmony of lines and shapes, as well as the diversity of plants, make it a place conducive to walking and contemplation.

Visitors can stroll through the boxwood-lined paths, admire the fountains and enjoy the calm surroundings. These gardens are considered one of the finest examples of classical landscape art in the region. They are also classified as Remarkable Gardens by the Ministry of Culture, testifying to their botanical richness and aesthetic value.

A leisure and discovery space for the whole family

The Château de la Roche Courbon estate is not limited to its castle and gardens. It also offers many fun and educational activities for young and old. Through guided tours, exhibitions and workshops, the castle highlights the history of the place and local traditions. The museum located inside the castle allows you to discover period objects and learn more about the daily life of the lords of the region.

For nature and adventure lovers, the prehistoric caves located in the park offer a unique setting. These cavities, once inhabited by prehistoric men, are a true testimony to the past and allow us to better understand the ancient occupation of the site. Younger visitors can also enjoy a fun trail, designed to awaken their curiosity and sense of observation.

      Practical information for visitors

The Château de la Roche Courbon is open all year round and offers opening hours adapted to the season. It is advisable to check availability before visiting, particularly due to one-off events or privatizations that may limit access to certain parts of the estate.

Visitors can plan between two and three hours for a complete discovery of the site, including a visit to the interiors , gardens and caves. For those who wish to extend their visit, a picnic area is available in the park.

What to discover around the Château de la Roche Courbon?

Located just 30 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean, Château de la Roche Courbon is ideally placed to explore the region's natural and cultural riches. Hiking enthusiasts will appreciate the many marked trails that cross the surrounding forests, offering panoramic views of the Charente Valley and its varied landscapes. These walks allow you to discover the local flora and fauna, while enjoying a bucolic setting.

A few kilometres from the castle, the towns of Saintes and Rochefort offer a dive into history with their monuments and museums. Saintes, with its Roman amphitheatre and medieval churches, is a real journey through the ages. Rochefort, for its part, is famous for its maritime arsenal and the Corderie Royale, bearing witness to France's naval past.

Local markets and small producers in the region also allow you to discover local specialties, such as Marennes-Oléron oysters, Pineau des Charentes or goat cheese. Many markets are held throughout the week in the surrounding villages, offering an ideal opportunity to taste local products and meet the producers.

Finally, rivers like the Charente or the Seudre invite you to relax, whether through boat trips or breaks at the water's edge. These waterways are also ideal places for fishing or canoeing enthusiasts.

A very beautiful castle with an interesting history linked to French literature as well as historic battles. It has the mist amazing hand-painted ceilings I've ever seen. Photos are not permitted inside this privately-owned château. The guided tour of the inside is recommended; the very lovely gardens are visited on one's own. Guided tour is in French with written information in several languages. We spent a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon here, including an ice cream at the food stall.

Beautiful castle and gardens, but we only got to see 4 or 5 rooms on the tour, and photos were not permitted inside. We were not free to explore the inside on our own, but we could roam outside at our leisure. The nearby snack bar had delicious ice cream and pastries, among other items.

Definitely worth a visit! Take the short walk to the prehistoric caves and then spend time in the beautiful grounds. Take care however to check the website as in the summer it often closes early for weddings.
